The suspect, identified as Darius Nabaasa, 42, serves as the LC I Chairperson of Omukibungo village, Kanyamahwa parish, in Nyakagyeme sub-county.

He was taken into custody on Sunday, January 11th, 2026, in connection with an offense reportedly committed on the evening of January 7th.

The targeted materials belonged to Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi (Katugugu), the NRM flag bearer for the Rujumbura County constituency.

According to preliminary police reports and source accounts, the vandalism occurred shortly after Muhwezi concluded a campaign rally at Half London Trading Centre in Omukibungo village.

The posters displayed around the centre were allegedly torn down after the rally, which was held as part of his constituency outreach between 5:30 PM and 5:54 PM.

Sources indicate that Nabaasa, together with two other individuals still at large, is accused of defacing the posters, with the incident allegedly commanded by him in his capacity as area chairperson.

Sources further allege that Nabaasa had demanded Hon. Muhwezi seek his permission to hold rallies, a directive that reportedly escalated into him ordering the destruction of posters near Aryayijuka Obed’s home.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation.

He stated the incident was formally reported at Rukungiri Police Station, which prompted immediate investigative action.

He detailed that police have recorded statements from relevant witnesses, visited and documented the crime scene, and recovered exhibits, including photographs of the damaged posters.

“Investigations are actively progressing to apprehend the remaining suspects. We are conducting thorough inquiries to establish the full chronology and motive behind this act. We also urge the public to maintain peace and respect electoral campaign materials as provided for by law,” Maate stated.

The arrest underscores heightened campaign sensitivities, as authorities reiterate calls for all political actors and community leaders to foster a peaceful and respectful electoral environment.
