KISORO, UGANDA – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on the residents of Kisoro District to embrace the cultivation of Hass avocados as a strategic means to boost household income, fight poverty, and reduce alcohol abuse.

The message was delivered by the former Inspector General of Police, Rtd. Gen. Kale Kayihura, during his ongoing community outreach in the district.

Gen. Kayihura, who is also the Chairperson of the Bufumbira Twifatanye Savings and Credit Cooperative Union Ltd, addressed gatherings in Mupaka Town Council, Busanza, Nyabwishenya, and Kirundo sub-counties on the second day of his tour.

He emphasized that President Museveni remains deeply committed to supporting grassroots initiatives that uplift communities.

He stated that Hass avocado farming offers a commercial alternative to transform regions like Kigezi, where poverty has been exacerbated by alcohol abuse.

Dr. Francis Runumi highlighted structural challenges, noting farmers currently grow crops for consumption, not cash, with limited land and low coffee production worsening the income gap.

He explained that while the Parish Development Model’s impact has been slow, the President’s call for cooperative formation offers a timely and more sustainable pathway forward.

Ignatius Ayebare announced the Microfinance Support Centre is ready to provide grants and loans to support the cooperative’s transformation agenda.

He affirmed that once operational, the union will attract further funding from partners and banks, creating a robust financial ecosystem for farmers.

The LC3 Chairperson of Nyabwishenya Sub-county, Laurent Uwiringiyimana, confirmed his sub-county’s readiness to join the union, stating a commitment to any initiative that improves people’s welfare.

He noted they have already begun improving sanitation and that the avocado project aligns perfectly with their development goals.

Louis Bishubeho, the District Councilor for Kirundo Sub-county, welcomed the new focus on agribusiness, noting that it complements ongoing tourism promotion in the area.
