NTUNGAMO, UGANDA – The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Ntungamo, Mrs. Miriam Kageiga Mugisha, has issued a firm assurance regarding the security and integrity of Uganda’s border with Rwanda during the electoral period.

The RDC made these remarks while speaking to the press over the weekend at the receipt of black ballot boxes at the Ntungamo district Electoral offices ahead of the January 15th Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

RDC Kageiga declared the border secure and free from disruptive external threats, directly addressing concerns about cross-border interference from Rwanda.

“The security is well guaranteed at the borders, and there are no threats that Rwandans crossing to Uganda will disrupt our elections. Mostly those who cross come to do business, so they will have nothing to do with our electoral process,” RDC Kageiga stated.

The RDC underscored the robust national voter verification system, which uses National Identity Cards and Biometric Voter Verification machines to confirm voter eligibility.

Uganda and Rwanda share three official border crossings in the region: the Katuna/Gatuna border in Kabale, the Kyanika/Cyanika border in Kisoro, and the Kagitumba/Mirama Hills border located within Ntungamo District.

The Ntungamo District Returning Officer, Mr. Charles Wafula, confirmed the receipt of all 812 ballot boxes, destined for an equal number of polling stations across the district’s 34 sub-counties and five constituencies.

Mr. Wafula announced that all materials would be dispatched to polling centers in the early hours of polling day, Thursday, January 15th, outlining the final distribution phase.

The transparency of the process was witnessed by several candidates, including Kajara County Member of Parliament Hon. James Hunter and Ruhama County Constituency MP Hon. Kwasibwe Henry Zikuratire, among other stakeholders.

They observed as two motor vehicle trucks loaded with the sealed black ballot boxes were officially received and verified.
