KABALE, UGANDA – Security officers have been cautioned against firing gunshots into the air as a form of celebrating the New Year on January 1, 2025.

Speaking from his office at the Kigezi Regional Police Headquarters in Kabale District, Maate emphasized that the caution was primarily aimed at security officers who might become excited and attempt to fire their guns, in form of fireworks.
“We have had incidents of people trying to fire into the air during fireworks displays. However, this is a punishable offense,” he stated.
Maate also warned that only individuals authorized by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) will be permitted to conduct fireworks during New Year’s celebrations. He stressed that such displays should be managed solely by technically skilled personnel to prevent accidents. Furthermore, he noted that fireworks sessions should not last longer than five minutes.
Other prohibitions include burning car tires and other materials that could hinder road use, as well as reckless driving by intoxicated or overly excited drivers.
“Some people consume excessive alcohol and attempt to drive recklessly to welcome the new year. Those involved will face arrest,” he warned.
Meanwhile, Maate assured the public that police had been strategically deployed to prevent any criminal activities and to respond swiftly to any incidents that may occur.
