FOOTBALL – The FUFA Western Regional League leaders, SC Volcanoes, have secured a crucial 1–0 victory over Kihihi Young Boys in a match played at the Kihihi High School Playground.

Despite a delayed 4:25 PM kickoff, both teams displayed high energy from the opening minutes of a hard-fought contest that keeps SC Volcanoes firmly at the summit of the table.

The Kanungu-based hosts, Kihihi Young Boys, started as the stronger side, launching several attacking moves within the first ten minutes in search of an early breakthrough.

However, the SC Volcanoes defense remained resolute, with defender Johnson Turinawe, famously known as ‘Bafana’, making several crucial blocks to deny the hosts.

He was well-supported by teammate Henry (shirt number 2), whose defensive efforts disrupted Kihihi’s attacking rhythm and forced dangerous striker Julius Rukyamuzi (shirt number 9) into multiple offside positions and speculative shots on goal.

Despite Rukyamuzi’s impressive 13-goal season being kept largely at bay, SC Volcanoes grew into the game against the run of play, with their persistence paying off just before halftime.

In the 45th minute, attacking midfielder Francis Ndawula (shirt number 8) found the back of the net, giving the Kisoro-based side a crucial 1–0 lead heading into the break.

SC Volcanoes returned from halftime with renewed energy in search of a second goal, but the resilient Kihihi Young Boys defense prevented them from extending their lead.

The hosts looked dangerous on quick counter-attacks but could not find an equalizer, allowing SC Volcanoes to manage the game and maintain their slender advantage until the final whistle.

The victory pushes SC Volcanoes to 30 points from 10 matches and keeps them top of the table, while the defeat leaves Kihihi Young Boys in the relegation zone with just 6 points and a negative goal difference.

Despite playing away, SC Volcanoes enjoyed considerable support from sections of the crowd. Many Bafumbira residents working in Kihihi rallied behind the Kisoro-based team throughout the match.

SC Volcanoes head coach Patrick Ochan described the match as an intense affair against a determined Kihihi Young Boys side fighting relegation.

While satisfied with the win, he admitted his team must refine their finishing and will “go back to the drawing board” to solve the problem.

Coach Ochan also confirmed the club signed seven new players before the transfer window closed, though some arrived just a day before the match and were unavailable for the trip to Kihihi.

Meanwhile, Kihihi Young Boys’ coaching staff, led by Coach Bwambale Richard, declined to speak to our reporter when approached for their reaction to the match.
