Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) has introduced a crackdown on charcoal stoves in high-risk areas, as part of efforts to create a cleaner, safer city, according to a letter dated October 24, 2024.

Over 2,320 free stalls are now available for displaced vendors in KCCA-owned markets, accessible with an LC1 letter and National ID, as part of government efforts to ensure a smooth transition and restore city order.

Vendors are strongly encouraged to apply for these spaces through the KCCA Market Allocation Committees and Market Administrators, who have been directed to fast-track the process.

“The Government has made available over 2000 free workspaces in KCCA-owned markets for which Vendors are strongly encouraged to apply,” the authority stated in a public notice.

Alongside the relocation drive, KCCA issued an immediate directive targeting individuals who prepare or sell food using charcoal stoves (sigiri) or other open-fire equipment in taxi parks and along streets.

Citing a “risk of serious fire hazards that may endanger lives and property,” authorities have announced a crackdown starting in the Central Business District.

The operation will focus on key streets including Ben Kiwanuka Street, Luwuum Street, Namirembe Road, Nakivubo Road, Allen Road, and Kikuubo Lane.

KCCA stated that this timeline provides sufficient time for all affected vendors to move to the designated work spaces and is appealing for cooperation to restore order, enhance safety, and promote a clean, organized, and liveable city for all.
