Kampala, Uganda – The security protocol head of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine Mr. Edward Ssebufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, has been remanded to Masaka Main Prison until May 25, 2025.

The development comes after his nine-day disappearance, from April 26, 2025, in Kiwango village in Mukono district, which sparked widespread concern and speculation.

His whereabouts remained unknown until May 5, 2025, when he was seen limping and supported by an unidentified security personnel as he was taken to Masaka Court, where journalists were barred from entering the courtroom, fueling further speculation and concern.

A short video clip showing Ssebufu’s frail state and inability to walk unaided has raised questions about his treatment during his disappearance.

National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu expressed deep concern over the condition of Eddie Mutwe, whom he said was badly beaten, with visible swelling on his head and feet, leaving him unable to walk unaided and in a pathetic state.

Kyagulanyi emphasized that Mutwe was in good health at the time of his abduction, raising serious questions about the treatment he received during his detention.

“We have been told that his head and feet are swollen. He was badly beaten. He is unable to walk unaided. He is in a pathetic state. And yet, when he was abducted, he was very healthy. This is what Museveni’s son did to him! Instead of releasing him to get treatment, they rushed him to a court and a judicial officer shamelessly remanded him,” Kyagulanyi said.

The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) had previously called for Ssebufu’s immediate release from detention, citing Article 53(1)(d) of the Constitution.

The controversy surrounding Eddie Mutwe’s disappearance and subsequent remand has sparked a heated debate about human rights and the rule of law in Uganda.

In a surprising twist, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Museveni, had earlier confirmed on Twitter that Ssebufu was in his basement, undergoing a Runyankole lecture.
