In an interview, the aspiring midwives reaffirmed their commitment to reducing premature births and maternal deaths during childbirth, a critical issue in Uganda.

Under a memorandum of understanding with Kisoro Hospital, the students are acquiring practical experience by delivering care to patients, a partnership that has notably enhanced service delivery at the hospital.

Some of the students, including Uwihayimana Vanita and Kamanzi Emily, emphasized the importance of raising awareness among pregnant mothers about the critical role midwives play in saving lives during childbirth.

They also highlighted the need to address misconceptions about midwives’ intentions, particularly regarding requests for patients to purchase additional medication from private facilities.

Other students, including Kobusinge Donata, Mahirwe Joan, and Nyabonyo Brandinah, noted that some mothers and caregivers misinterpret midwives’ instructions, leading to allegations of extortion.

They also acknowledged that, in high-pressure situations, midwives may need to take firm measures to ensure a safe delivery.

Academic Registrar Berinah Uwimana, a registered midwife, emphasized the importance of upcoming midwives remaining focused on delivering quality care without exploiting patients.

She confirmed that since partnering with Kisoro Hospital, no cases of misconduct have been reported, which will benefit their future work in government facilities.

Uwimana also noted that during delivery, mothers often experience extreme pain, which can lead to challenging situations where in some cases, midwives may need to take firm measures to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.

The International Day of the Midwives is celebrated under the theme “Critical in Every Crisis,” highlighting the vital role midwives play in humanitarian and emergency settings worldwide.
