Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo – The Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), President William Samoei Ruto, has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating peace and security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The Chair’s address comes hours after the M23 rebels announced they had seized control of the key city of Goma, causing apocalyptic scenes of panic and despair as hundreds of thousands of people fled with what little they carry to escape the violence.
President Ruto emphasized the need for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, highlighting the obligation of all parties to facilitate humanitarian access to affected populations.
He urged both sides to pursue peaceful means to resolve the conflict, which has been exacerbated by ongoing military actions, including the closure of airspace in Goma.
In response to the crisis, President Ruto announced that the EAC will convene an Extraordinary Summit within the next 48 hours to chart the way forward.
The EAC is committed to collaborating with the African Union, Southern African Development Community, and the international community to promote dialogue and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Meanwhile as the situation in Goma continues to deteriorate, the international Communities are calling for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians.
The UN has also warned of a potential humanitarian catastrophe, with millions of people at risk of being displaced or caught in the crossfire.
