Heartbroken Parents Demand Justice After Newborn Dies at Kambuga Hospital

Her desperate cries for help went unanswered for hours. When help finally came, it was too late. A mother in Kanungu District is now mourning her newborn, who tragically died after falling during delivery at Kambuga Hospital, allegedly because the nurse on duty was too busy on her phone to respond. The family is now fighting for justice, and authorities are under pressure to act.

KANUNGU – The heartbroken parents in Nyakabungo Town Council, Kanungu District, are demanding full justice after their newborn baby tragically died at Kambuga Hospital, allegedly due to shocking negligence by a health worker.

The grieving parents, Denis Ampamire and his wife Joan Ainembabazi, who reside in Bushekwe village, are seeking justice following the death of their newborn baby at Kambuga Hospital, allegedly due to negligence by a health worker.

The mother, Joan, painfully recalls that she was left completely unattended in the labour ward for hours on Sunday, while the nurse on duty was reportedly preoccupied with personal phone calls instead of responding to her desperate cries for help.

She further alleges that this inexcusable delay caused her baby to slip and fall to the floor during delivery, sustaining critical injuries that tragically claimed the innocent newborn’s life shortly afterward.

The father, Denis Ampamire, said that the family reported the matter to Kambuga Hospital’s administration but was dissatisfied with the response, prompting them to conduct a post-mortem that later confirmed their baby died from injuries sustained during delivery.

He has thus appealed to the Kanungu District Health Officer and the Ministry of Health to investigate the case urgently and help the family secure justice, especially as the mother remains in poor health and the family has incurred significant medical expenses.

Hon. Elias Komwani, the District Councilor for Nyakabungo Town Council, extended his heartfelt sympathies to the grieving family over the devastating loss of their child and squarely attributed the tragedy to the inexcusable negligence of certain health workers at the facility.

He appealed to higher authorities to urgently intervene, not only to help the bereaved parents secure the justice they deserve but also to overhaul and significantly improve healthcare services at Kambuga Hospital to prevent future recurrences.

The Mayor of Nyakabungo Town Council, Frugence Muhumuza, acknowledged the matter, confirming that the parents reported this case to his office on 24th August 2026 and later advised them to take the body back to Kambuga for a post-mortem examination.

He attributed the issue to poor services at Kambuga Hospital, noting that this is not the first incident recorded from the same hospital, and therefore appealed to responsible authorities to resolve the matter before conditions worsen.

Meanwhile, Karungi Honest, the Kanungu District Assistant District Health Officer in charge of Maternal, Child Health and Nursing, confirmed the incident and pledged to visit the affected family to get details and solve the problem amicably.

Efforts to get a comment from Kambuga Hospital management by the time we wrote this heartbreaking story were unsuccessful, as their phones went unanswered. However, the body is still at Kambuga Hospital, where it was taken on Monday for a post-mortem examination.

This incident comes at a time when cases of alleged negligence in health facilities continue to raise concern among residents in Kanungu District, particularly at Kambuga General Hospital.
