RUBIRIZI – Residents of Rubirizi Town Council Rubirizi district have staged protests against the overpowering stench emanating from a pig slaughterhouse built in the middle of a residential area, putting their lives at risk.

Affected residents, Arinitwe Maxensia and Tumwekwase Edwin, have voiced their frustrations to health officials, demanding immediate intervention over the unbearable stench from the slaughterhouse.
They confirmed that the foul odor has turned their daily lives into a nightmare, seeping into every corner of their homes and leaving them unable to sleep, eat, or find peace in their own community.

With improper waste disposal creating unsanitary conditions that could spark a disease outbreak, the residents are now demanding that the government relocate the facility away from their homes once and for all.
Nyakasharu II LC1 Chairperson, Ndyanabo Vicent Karikwita, has backed the residents’ protest, confirming that the slaughterhouse was constructed in the heart of their community without proper consultation or due process.
He described the situation as a public health crisis, emphasizing that the overwhelming stench and mounting filth make the community’s urgent call for relocation both reasonable and justified.

Rubirizi District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Mugayi Henry, has moved to reassure the concerned residents, acknowledging their grievances and promising swift action on behalf of the authorities.
The district veterinary officer confirmed that a health team will be dispatched to inspect the slaughter facility and ensure it meets all health and environmental standards.
