KAMPALA – The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially set the date for the long-awaited nationwide elections of Village (LC I) and Parish/Ward (LC II) Chairpersons, along with Women Council leaders.

Uganda’s long-delayed LC I and LC II elections, the first since 2018, are finally scheduled, ending years of term extensions and paving the way for grassroots democracy.
Byabakama said the electoral programme will commence on June 22 through the recruitment of Village Election Officials, a process that continues until July 1, 2026.
Recruitment of Sub-county and Parish Supervisors kicks off on June 25, followed by a July 6–10 phase for resident verification and voter register compilation, with July 10 marking the LC I roll cut-off.
The EC Chairperson confirmed that the registers will be opened for public scrutiny on July 13 and 14, giving citizens a two-day window to ensure their names are accurately captured.
“For anyone to take part in these elections as either a voter or contestant, the biggest requirement is for one to be a resident and that happens when you are in the village register,” Byabakama stated.
The village women committee electoral exercise will be the first under the roadmap, with nominations scheduled for July 15 to July 19, 2026, at Sub-county, Town Council, and Municipal Division headquarters.
Campaigns for the village-level positions, Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Publicity Secretary, and Secretary for Finance, will run from July 20 to 22, with polling day set for July 23, 2026.
Voting will be conducted using the open queue system, where voters line up behind their preferred candidates, their agents, or candidates’ portraits, as stipulated under the National Women’s Councils Act.
For the Village (LC I) Chairperson elections, aspiring candidates will obtain nomination forms between July 9 and July 14 at the Parish level. Formal nominations will be conducted from July 15 to July 19 at Sub-county, Town Council, and Division headquarters.
Campaigns for LC I Chairperson candidates are scheduled to run from July 20 to July 27, with polling day set for Tuesday, July 28, 2026, across all 71,214 villages nationwide.
Election day will follow a structured timeline: voter assembly and verification from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, voter education and briefing from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, and actual voting and counting from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
Results from village-level elections will be declared by midday, with Village Executive Committees formed in the afternoon, before the process shifts to the Parish/Ward (LC II) level.
Meanwhile at Parish/Ward level, the Commission will compile the Parish/Ward Voters’ Register on July 29, followed by a two-day public display from July 30 to 31 for scrutiny.
Nominations for Parish/Ward (LC II) Chairperson candidates are set for August 3, followed by campaigns from August 4 to August 9, with polls set to be conducted on August 10, 2026.
The announcement comes after the government released Shs56 billion to finance the electoral exercise, enabling the Commission to organize the elections before the expiry of the current local leaders’ tenure.
