RUKUNGIRI – The Rukungiri District Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Abbas Namara, has confirmed that his office has received about 20 petitions challenging the declared Local Council One election results.

The Returning Officer confirmed that the Local Council One elections were successfully conducted across all 831 villages, with no community left behind in the historic exercise.
He expressed pride in the flawlessly functioning electoral machinery, attributing the success to the dedication of electoral staff, security personnel, and the remarkable civic duty demonstrated by the people of Rukungiri.
“I am pleased to confirm that every single village in Rukungiri District successfully conducted the LC1 elections. This is a testament to the commitment of our electoral staff, security personnel, and the remarkable civic duty demonstrated by the people of Rukungiri,” Namara stated.
Namara acknowledged that about 20 LC I Chairmanship aspirants have since lodged petitions challenging the results, reassuring the public that the Electoral Commission is treating each complaint with the seriousness it deserves.
He further confirmed that all petitions are being received and reviewed, with thorough investigations underway before complainants are informed of the outcomes, signaling a commitment to transparency and fairness.
“We are currently receiving and reviewing all petitions. Thorough investigations will be conducted before those who lodged complaints are informed of the outcomes. We remain committed to transparency and fairness,” Namara added.

Meanwhile, Namara further unveiled the timeline for the next phase of local government elections, with nominations for Parish Women Councils and Local Council Two positions scheduled for Monday, August 3.
He emphasized that the nomination exercise will be conducted for one day only, urging all aspiring candidates to turn up early with complete documentation.

The Returning Officer added that the Parish Women Council elections are set for Friday, while LC2 polls will follow on the subsequent Monday, completing the electoral calendar for the parish level.
