RUBANDA – The Police Marine Unit has recovered the body of a drowned teacher from the deep waters of Lake Bunyonyi, following an intensive five-day search operation.

The deceased has been identified as Tumukunde John, 45, a teacher who drowned on July 26 when his canoe capsized on Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most scenic yet unforgiving water bodies.

Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime stated that the recovery operation was the result of unwavering dedication from multiple stakeholders who engaged in a critical five-day search.

He added that the Police Marine Unit demonstrated exceptional professionalism and persistence, working tirelessly alongside skilled local divers who know the lake’s treacherous depths intimately.

“We deeply appreciate the collaborative spirit that made this recovery possible. This operation exemplifies what can be achieved when law enforcement, local communities, and district authorities work together toward a common goal,” said SP Tumushime.

The Police spokesperson issued a stern advisory stating that life jackets are non-negotiable, and all passengers and operators must wear properly fitted life jackets at all times while on boats.

He warned against nighttime navigation and travel during bad weather, noting that Lake Bunyonyi’s conditions can shift rapidly and pose serious risks even to experienced boat operators.

“Safety comes first for everyone on Lake Bunyonyi and other Kigezi water bodies. Life jackets are mandatory for all passengers and operators at all times. Please avoid night travel and bad weather, as conditions on the lake can change quickly and put even experienced boaters at risk,” said SP Tumushime.

Police have since stressed the need for regular vessel maintenance and strict adherence to passenger limits, saying that poorly maintained canoes and overloading have claimed too many lives across the region.

Authorities are urging the public to report any missing persons to the nearest police station immediately, as early reporting allows for faster response and increases the chances of successful rescue operations.
