The development follows a cloud of grief and outrage that has settled over the Ugandan sports community following the tragic death of Gongodyo, who succumbed to injuries after being set upon by a mob in Kampala.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, confirmed to the press that Gongodyo was battered in the incident, which occurred on the evening of Friday, June 5, 2026.

The deceased Gongodyo was allegedly accused by members of the public of snatching a woman’s handbag moments before the violence erupted.

SP Kawala confirmed that the police rushed the critically injured athlete to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment, but Gongodyo was pronounced dead at approximately 7:00 p.m. that evening despite their efforts.

“Gongodyo was allegedly battered on Friday evening, June 5, 2026, after being falsely accused of snatching a handbag. Despite our officers rushing him to Mulago Hospital, he was tragically pronounced dead at 7:00 p.m.,” SP Kawala confirmed.

Meanwhile, the three individuals currently held at Kira Road Police Station have since been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet, all arrested to assist with inquiries.

Police have since condemned the rising tide of vigilante justice, urging the public to report crimes to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
