The launch event, held at the Saza Play Grounds in Kisoro Municipality, sets the stage for the official anniversary celebrations scheduled for February 6, 2026, in Kabale District.

The celebrations are anchored on the powerful theme: “Preserving the gains of the Revolution and Honouring the Sacrifice of the freedom fighters: A call for National Unity, peace and socio-economic transformation.”

Prime Minister Nabbanja paid tribute to the deep-rooted patriotism and historic contributions to national security of the Kigezi region.

She highlighted its strategic border location with Rwanda and the DRC, noting its key role in safeguarding peace, promoting trade, and enhancing regional cooperation.

“This region has a long history of patriotism and contribution to national security. Being strategically located at the borders of Rwanda and the DRC makes the area a key partner in safeguarding peace, promoting trade, and enhancing regional cooperation,” Nabbanja stated.

She announced a significant package of infrastructure and social development projects earmarked for Kisoro District and the wider region, reaffirming the government’s commitment to equitable development.

The announced infrastructure boost includes the tarmacking of key tourism roads and the expansion of Kisoro airfield into a National Airport.

The road projects include the vital tarmacking of Kisoro-Rubuguri-Katojo, Rubuguri-Nteko-Buhoma, and Kisoro-Mgahinga roads, directly connecting Kigezi’s beauty and enterprise to the nation and the world.

She also unveiled a healthcare initiative, committing to establish a hospital in every district and enhance health unit coverage at the parish and sub-county levels.

The Prime Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing regional infrastructure and opportunities, and highlighted the UPDF’s evolution into a professional force promoting peace beyond Uganda’s borders.

The Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Huda Abason Oleru, emphasized the modern UPDF’s pro-people ethos, contrasting it with past regimes where military forces were used to torment civilians.

The Deputy CDF, Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, explained that Kigezi was chosen for the 45th anniversary to honor the region’s elders who fought for Uganda’s peace.

He further detailed the Army’s role in securing the nation and extending that stability to support neighboring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and South Sudan.

“We are here to honour the elders of Kigezi Sub Region who fought for the peace in Uganda. The Army has done much in securing Uganda and has now exported that security and stability to support our neighbouring countries,” Okiding said.

The launch ceremony, attended by local government officials, cultural leaders, security chiefs, and thousands of residents, was marked by cultural performances and a display of civic-military cooperation.

Tarehe Sita (6th February) marks the date in 1981 when the National Resistance Army (NRA) launched the armed struggle that led to the liberation of Uganda.
