The Assistant RDC of Rubirizi District, Dagaras Rwamutojo, told attendees that contraception is not just a woman’s issue, stressing the critical role men must play in reproductive health decisions.
He strongly underscored the role of education in raising awareness and dismantling myths surrounding family planning within the community.
“Contraception is not just a woman’s issue. Men have a critical role to play in these decisions, as these methods promote healthy families, economic empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods,” said Dagaras.
The Project Coordinator for ACODEV Uganda, Ategeka Chris, and Hon. Agaba Obed Byakureka, the NRM flag bearer for LC V Chairperson in Rubirizi District, stressed that involving men as primary household decision-makers is essential for success.
They noted that men’s active participation in contraception promotes social cohesion, healthy interaction, and informed reproductive health decisions for couples.
The dialogue also addressed the broader impact on population growth and economic stability, linking responsible family planning to improved resource management and sustainable development in the district.
The Headteacher of St. Michael High School, James Rukizakale, praised the initiative and encouraged fellow men to adopt contraceptive methods for their families and community, noting its profound impact on well-being and population control.
He further emphasized shared parental responsibility, urging men to escort their wives to antenatal checkups and become involved fathers to create supportive environments for their children.
“Family planning has a profound impact on family well-being and controlling population growth. It is the responsibility of men to care for their wives. Becoming responsible, involved fathers from the earliest stages helps children grow up in supportive environments,” said Rukizakale.
The meeting marked a significant step in shifting cultural perceptions in Rubirizi District, promoting the idea that contraception and reproductive health are shared responsibilities.
