RUBANDA, UGANDA – The in-charge warden of the Ruhija sector at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park was confirmed dead over the weekend in a fatal road accident along the Rubanda-Ruhija murram road in Rubanda District.

Sources indicate the incident occurred around 5:00 AM on October 12, 2025, when the vehicle, traveling from Kabale town towards the Ruhija sector, lost control on the Rubanda-Ruhija road in Kitahurira village, Rubanda District.
The sole survivor of the crash is Kibuka Jefferson, an accountant at the park’s Ruhija office, who sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Kigezi Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that preliminary findings indicate the Toyota Premio veered out of control as it approached a slight curve.
“The motor vehicle lost control at a slightly curved corner and ended up overturning several times into a sloped landscape and gardens, killing the driver on the spot,” Maate stated.
Upon receiving the alert, a police team led by D/Cpl Saturday Sabatisian visited the scene to document the incident, after which the body of the late Maloba Isaac was conveyed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
The damaged vehicle was towed from the scene and is currently parked at Rubanda Central Police Station (CPS), awaiting a comprehensive inspection by a certified Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Authorities confirmed that the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) management was immediately informed about the accident involving their staff and is actively engaged on the ground, providing necessary support.
The police spokesperson confirmed that inquiries are ongoing as traffic investigators work to determine the precise cause of the accident that claimed the life of the dedicated conservationist.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the close-knit UWA fraternity and the wider community in Rubanda, with many mourning the loss of a colleague dedicated to protecting one of Uganda’s most precious natural heritage sites.
