Witnesses recounted that the suspect was seen attempting to flee the scene after the alleged theft but was intercepted by vigilant cattle sellers and buyers who cut his escape short.
“The suspect was seen snatching money from a businessman’s pocket as he tried to run away. The cattle business people intercepted him and started hitting him with walking sticks, stones, and boulders,” a witness anonymously disclosed.
The mob attack left Amaani with severe, life-threatening injuries before the situation was de-escalated by the intervention of police officers.
A second witness stated that officers managed to fight their way through the irate crowd, which was intent on killing the suspect, in order to rescue him.
“If it was not for the police officers manning the cattle market site, this man was going to die. But the officers fought and rescued him from the irate business people who wanted to finish his life,” another witness stated.
The police subsequently rushed the critically injured Amaani to Rubaare Health Centre IV for emergency treatment, where his current condition remains unknown.
The incident has cast a shadow over the weekly market and raised serious concerns about mob justice, prompting an expected investigation by local authorities into the violent attack.
