KISORO, UGANDA – Territorial Police in Kisoro District have launched a full-scale investigation into the tragic death of a 21-year-old man, whose body was discovered in the early hours of Thursday, suspected to be a case of murder by a mob.

The deceased has been identified as Ivan Niyonsaba, a casual labourer and porter, who resided in Zindiro cell, Kamonyi ward, Northern Division, within Kisoro Municipality.

Reports indicate that Niyonsaba’s lifeless body was discovered by members of the public on the morning of Thursday, September 26, 2025. He had left his home on the evening of Wednesday, September 25, to report for his usual work as a porter.

While the exact time of the incident and the identity of the assailants remain unknown, investigators are strongly considering the possibility of mob justice, given the circumstances and the location where the body was discovered in a drainage trench at Kisoro Old Market.

Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that upon being alerted, a team swiftly cordoned off the area, where the scene was then thoroughly examined, photographed, and documented for evidence to apprehend the perpetrators.

Niyonsaba’s body has been transported to the Kisoro Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

“The scene of crime was examined and documented, and the body was conveyed to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for postmortem. Inquiries are currently at hand to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident,” stated Maate.

Maate issued an appeal for information, urging anyone who knows about Niyonsaba’s activities on September 24 or witnessed suspicious activity near Kisoro Old Market to assist the investigation.

“We condemn this act in the strongest terms. Taking the law into one’s own hands is a criminal offense. Suspected criminals must be apprehended and handed over to the police for processing through the legal system,” said Maate.

In response to an incident that has sent shockwaves through the Kisoro community and highlighted ongoing concerns about vigilante violence, police have assured the public of their serious commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
