Abductions and Gun Misuse Allegations Spark Political Showdown in Rukiga

Rukiga, Uganda – Rukiga District National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders have stormed the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) over escalating political tensions and insecurity following last month’s NRM primary elections.

The delegation, led by Rukiga District NRM Chairperson Frank Kyerere, submitted a written petition to the RDC expressing concern over reported cases of vandalism, assault, and harassment targeting supporters, agents, and government officials.

During an earlier press briefing at Summit Hotel in Muhanga, Frank Kyerere accused Andrew Muhwezi, the spouse of Rukiga Woman MP Hon. Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi, of collaborating with individuals posing as CID officials.

Kyerere alleged the group has been unlawfully abducting people in the district, fueling political violence and heightening tensions after the NRM primaries, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.

He further accused Andrew Muhwezi and Denis Nkwasibwe of misusing firearms and cited unresolved assault cases, including one involving a suspect named Rutare Amon.

Kyerere also claimed unidentified individuals linked to Muhwezi have carried out illegal arrests while denying lawyers access to detainees.

In response, NRM leaders demanded President Yoweri Museveni’s direct intervention, the unconditional release of arrested individuals within 24 hours, and the arrest of those accused of terrorizing the community.

They also called for an investigation into firearm possession by Muhwezi and Nkwasibwe, along with government clarification on the alleged illegal arrests.

The leaders warned they would organize peaceful demonstrations across Rukiga District if their demands are unmet, demanding respect for the rule of law and protection of citizens’ rights.
