Uganda is set to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025), a premier continental football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The event will bring together national teams, officials from CAF, FIFA, and FUFA, as well as thousands of fans from across Africa.

The tournament, scheduled to take place from August 2nd to 29th, 2025, is expected to draw large crowds, significantly impacting traffic in and around Kampala, Entebbe, and other key venues.

Speaking to the media about traffic preparations, SP Michael Kananura, the Uganda Police Traffic Directorate spokesperson, said heavy traffic is anticipated around several key locations.

These include:

– Mandela National Stadium (Namboole)

– Wankulukuku Stadium – KISU Grounds (Bukoto) – FUFA Grounds (Kadiba Mengo)

– Kyambogo University Playground.

He added that the main stadium for matches will be Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, and travelers from Entebbe International Airport to various hotels and venues should expect congested roads.

SP Kananura stated that congestion is particularly expected on the following routes:

– Entebbe International Airport → Speke Resort (via Entebbe Expressway, Kajjansi, and Munyonyo)

– Entebbe International Airport → Mestil Hotel (via Expressway, Northern Bypass, Yusuf Lule Road, and Mukwano Road)

– Entebbe International Airport → Serena Hotel (via Expressway, Northern Bypass, Yusuf Lule Road, and UBC Roundabout)

– Entebbe International Airport → Skyz Hotel (via Expressway, Northern Bypass, Kira Road, and Bukoto)

– Entebbe International Airport → FUFA Hotel Kisaasi (via Expressway, Northern Bypass, and Kisaasi Roundabout).

SP Kananura warned that access to training grounds and the main stadium will be affected and advised drivers to follow specific routes to avoid congestion:

– Namboole Annex: Northern Bypass → Namboole Roundabout

– Wankulukuku: Busega → Natete → Kabusu

– KISU Grounds: Kalerwe → Bukoto

– Kadiba Mengo: Makerere Hill Road → Nakulabye → Balintuma Road

– Kyambogo Grounds: Jinja Road → Kyambogo Junction

– Namboole Stadium: Yusuf Lule Road → Mulago → Kalerwe → Northern Bypass → Namboole Roundabout

Several traffic diversions will be implemented to manage flow and ensure safety:

– Trucks in Naalya will be diverted to Kyaliwajjala-Ssonde

– Trucks in Seeta will be redirected to Namugongo

– Trucks in Kinawataka will be denied access to Kireka

– Vehicles in Bweyogerere will be rerouted to Kinawataka Road (Jokas Hotel)

– Kireka Trading Centre will enforce a complete vehicle access ban from Hared Petrol Station

– The Kireka-Jokas stretch will be pedestrian-only

Parking arrangements at Mandela National Stadium include:

– VIP Parking: Southern Wing (accredited vehicles only)

– General Parking: Managed by Traffic Police (accreditation required for entry) .

The Traffic Police further advise the public to:

– Follow all instructions from traffic officers

– Plan journeys ahead of time

– Remain patient and courteous on the roads

– Expect delays during peak event hours.
