Kisoro, Uganda – The department of family and child protection unit at the Kisoro police station has identified key factors contributing to family disputes in the region.

According to Gideon Mfitumukiza, head of the family and child protection unit department at Kisoro central Police station, alcoholism, laziness, lack of jobs, and land wrangles are the primary causes of family conflicts.

Mfitumukiza made these remarks while addressing the media on Friday, ahead of World Women’s Day celebrations on March 8.

Notably, the department did not record any family dispute cases on March 7, 2025, which Mfitumukiza attributed to the department’s efforts in sensitizing communities against domestic violence.

However, Mfitumukiza emphasized that men still hesitate to report family dispute cases, leading to unresolved issues and severe consequences. Most cases, he noted, are registered by women.

To address these challenges, Mfitumukiza urged local leaders to take village courts seriously, handling cases locally to avoid unnecessary expenses and time wastage.

He also encouraged women to prioritize their families and marriages, especially on public holidays like World Women’s Day.

Mfitumukiza cautioned that abandoning children and husbands at home during celebrations can fuel family disputes.

He emphasized the importance of women loving their husbands and prioritizing their families, while avoiding situations that can lead to conflicts over conjugal rights.
