KAMPALA-UGANDA: The Uganda Prisons Service has confirmed its involvement in the ongoing 2024 National Population and Housing Census in the prison community.

According to Mr. Frank Baine, a total number of 397 enumerators and 125 supervisors, all uniformed Prison staff have embarked on counting the Prison communities in the 269 prisons and divided 19 regions in Uganda.
He confirmed that the exercise, which will last for 10 days, is aimed at counting the population of prisons communities, including; the 77,000 inmates, 14,198 staff plus a yet unknown number of staff families.
“I am glad to inform the public that for us we have started so well. We have started with prisoners and we hope this will take us 2 to 3 days then the remaining days will be for the barracks. The estimated total population of prisons could go to around 200,000 people including inmates, Prison staff and staff families” said Frank Baine.
Akello Doreen Prison staff enumerator, told the press that they are receiving good reception in the Prisons with an orderly collaborative community which is making the enumeration exercise smooth.
“The process is going on well and the gadgets we were using are effective in the prisons, we are receiving a good Reception” said Akello Doreen.
After Every 10 years, Uganda holds a National Population and Housing Census with the previous in 2014 followed by the ongoing which will last for 10 days from 10th to 20th May 2024.
