KASESE, UGANDA – The Ministry of Health has commissioned and inspected several key projects in Kasese District, marking a significant stride in strengthening healthcare infrastructure to save the lives of mothers and newborns.

The developments were spearheaded by Dr. Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, during a support supervision and commissioning tour this week.

The central achievement of the tour was the official commissioning of a new maternity ward and theatre at Nyabirongo Health Centre IV.

Dr. Atwine explained that the upgrade was a direct response to the facility’s initial inadequate state. “During an earlier visit, I found only two small blocks struggling to serve huge numbers,” she said.

This substantial upgrade transforms Nyabirongo into a functional community hospital, delivering vital maternity and surgical services directly to the population, though needs for more wards and staff remain.

Dr. Atwine also made a direct appeal to the community, urging mothers to prioritize antenatal care, maintain good nutrition during pregnancy, and deliver at health facilities.

“I appealed to mothers to attend antenatal care (ANC), ensure good nutrition during pregnancy, and deliver from a health facility. We commissioned a new maternity ward and theatre at Nyabirongo HCIV in Bukonzo East, Kasese,” Dr. Diana stated.

The Ministry’s delegation also conducted support supervision at the strategically located Bwera General Hospital on the Uganda-DRC border.

The team identified key service challenges and developed concrete plans to ensure the hospital meets its vital mandate for the large cross-border population.

The dual focus on both Nyabirongo HCIV and Bwera General Hospital demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening the entire healthcare ecosystem, from community-based units to general hospitals.
