The fatal accident, which has cast a pall over the community, occurred on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at approximately 10:45 PM in Misana Village, involving a Fuso Lorry (UBA 649Z).

According to the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, four of the deceased have been identified including male victims Musinguzi Justus and Turyagyenda Jackson.

He added that two of the deceased are females identified as Kekimuli and Kemigisha, both residents of Rubindi in Mbarara while the four other male victims are yet to be identified, pending notification of their next of kin.

The Police Spokesperson confirmed that seven people survived the crash with injuries and are currently receiving medical attention including the identified Babanza Joab, 45, and Turyasingura Valentino, 26.

Other identified survivors are Akampurira Amon, 31; Kyarikunda Jovanis, 49; Kayongo Yasin, 24; and Katushabe Joan, 42 while three male and one female victim, also injured, awaits formal identification.

Reliable sources indicate that the Fuso Lorry was traveling towards Rubindi when its driver, who remains unidentified and is currently at large, lost control of the vehicle on a slope.

Tayebwa confirmed that Buhweju Police swiftly responded to the scene, rescuing the seven injured survivors and rushing them to Nsiika Health Centre IV for urgent treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the same facility’s mortuary for post-mortem examination, as required by law.

The Buhweju District Traffic Department has launched a full investigation as the preliminary findings indicate the lorry was carrying mobile market vendors and that brake failure is a suspected cause.

A manhunt is now underway for the driver who fled the scene with the police are appealing to the public for assistance and remind all road users to comply with traffic rules and regulations.
