NTUNGAMO, UGANDA – National Unity Platform principal Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, has vowed to end what he calls the “naked promises” that have characterized Ugandan politics for decades.

The opposition party leader made these remarks on Saturday while addressing a charged gathering at his Ntungamo campaign rally an event, held at Rukiri Playground on the outskirts of Rubaare Town Council, drew massive crowds.

He took aim at the ruling National Resistance Movement government, accusing incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of deceiving the public for nearly four decades and vowing to usher in a new era of accountability.

Bobi Wine and his wife, Barbie Itungo, received an overwhelming welcome from supporters in Ntungamo District a significant show of force for the opposition despite reported pressure from police and the military.

Outlining his party’s manifesto, Bobi Wine promised to radically improve the health sector by rehabilitating dilapidated facilities, ensuring a constant supply of genuine drugs, and staffing all health centers adequately.

He also pledged a relentless fight against the “chronic disease of corruption” and promised to end segregation, tribalism, and nepotism, issues he accused the current government of failing to combat.

“We must end the era where fake drugs are given to innocent Ugandans and where corruption is a chronic disease that makes citizens suffer. My government will relentlessly fight this corruption and root out the segregation, tribalism, and nepotism that have been allowed to fester,” stated Kyagulanyi.

Kyagulanyi promised to free all political prisoners if elected, specifically naming his bodyguard, Edward Sebufu, four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, and Besigye’s aide, Obeid Lutale, among others currently incarcerated.

Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, who hails from Rubaare, rallied support for her husband revealing that their opponents attempted to divert supporters by luring them to a rival meeting with donations of mandazi and sodas.

Itungo advised supporters to accept any money or gifts offered but to ultimately vote to secure the country from what she described as liars.

The two were accompanied by a strong contingent of senior party officials, including Party Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, Ankole Region Coordinator Bright Muhumuza, Secretary General David Lubongoya, and Treasurer Benjamin Katana.

Also in attendance were MP Luwanga Kivumbi, along with local aspirants Godwin Rubahama, Oscar Kamugira Kentono, and Isma Kalyango.

The rally in Ntungamo signals a vigorous push by the main opposition party to make inroads into regions traditionally considered strongholds of the ruling government.
