KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Ministry of Water and Environment has issued a critical alert, urging farmers to maintain strict vigilance against the heightened threat of pests and plant diseases and to immediately report any signs to local agricultural officials.

The warning featured prominently in a sweeping weather advisory from the Ministry’s Department of Meteorological Services (DMS), which forecasts that the first decade of November 2025 will be dominated by significant rainfall throughout the country.

Exceptional rainfall is forecast for the western and west-central parts of the country, stretching from Kigezi through Ankole, Rwenzori, Bunyoro, and up to West Nile.

The Department confirmed that temperatures will vary significantly, with the hottest conditions in parts of West Nile and Acholi and the coolest in the southern regions and the highlands of Rwenzori and Elgon.

It also highlighted potential hazards from the heavy rains, including flash floods, lightning, waterlogged fields, disease outbreaks, and major transport disruptions.

The department has directed farmers in the Southwestern, Central, and Eastern regions to prune tree crops and construct drainage channels to prevent water stagnation and crop damage.

It urged the public to store rainwater for future dry periods, consume only safe, treated water, and take advantage of the current period for tree planting to support environmental protection.

Urban authorities have been instructed to proactively clear blocked drainage channels to mitigate the risk of floods that disrupt traffic and cause damage in urban centers.

Motorists are cautioned to avoid driving through flooded areas, as floodwaters are often deeper than they appear and possess the force to sweep vehicles away, presenting a significant life-threatening risk.

While the heavy rains present risks, the bulletin also notes that the continued rainfall will provide good conditions for crops and pastures to grow and will help maintain water supplies for production activities.
