KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, has detailed a sweeping plan to place education at the center of Uganda’s national development agenda for the next five years.

The plan, outlined in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) manifesto for 2026-2031 themed “Protecting the Gains,” promises a significant transformation across all levels of the education sector. It will have a strong focus on teacher recruitment, infrastructure modernization, and practical skills development.

Minister Janet Museveni endorsed this vision, positioning education at the forefront of Uganda’s progress from 2026-2031. She outlined a multi-pronged approach involving massive teacher recruitment, salary enhancements, and classroom modernization.

“Education will be at the forefront of Uganda’s progress from 2026 to 2031. We will introduce new teachers, enhance salaries, and modernize classrooms, ensuring our children learn and grow,” Janet stated.

She confirmed that a key pillar of the strategy is a renewed emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The plan aims to equip youth with market-relevant skills through expanded STEM programs and the continued rollout of Presidential Skilling Hubs.

For higher education, the Minister announced plans for increased infrastructure development, improved facilities, and expanded student support through government sponsorships and loans.

Janet Museveni also highlighted the recruitment of 49,406 new teachers and facility improvements as a critical investment in national human capital, directly linking it to future economic growth and stability.

“With 49,406 new teachers and improved facilities, our students will gain the knowledge and skills needed for the future,” she added.

The announcement comes as the 2026 general elections draw closer, with presidential candidates traveling the country to present their manifestos to the public.
