RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – Rubirizi District officials are championing tree planting and sustainable farming as essential long-term shields against environmental devastation, urging residents to become part of the solution.

The initiative comes after landslides and droughts devastated Magambo Sub-county, displacing over 500 households and destroying vital gardens.

Local leaders Tugabirwe Laurance, LC1 Chairperson of Bugaya I, and Hon. Kinjinia Molly, Vice Chairperson of Magambo Sub-county, confirmed that many families were left without food, shelter, and basic items.

They called upon the government to extend more emergency assistance, warning that without action, the area may face severe hunger, poverty, and worsening instability.

Delivering emergency relief items to the victims, Rubirizi Woman MP Aspirant and NRM flag bearer Arinaitwe Jeniva Nalongo stated that embracing sustainable practices like mulching and tree planting is crucial to protect homes and gardens from future disasters.

“The people of Magambo have suffered greatly. I urge government to channel more PDM funds and ensure SACCOs support families, not burden them with loans. Our people should put more effort in planting more trees and practicing modern farming ways,” Jeniva stated.

She emphasized that vulnerable households should be prioritized when allocating funds under the Parish Development Model (PDM) and that community SACCOs should be strengthened to provide support without the pressure of loan repayments.

Accompanying the aspiring legislator,Innocent Byamukama the chairperson and sole sponsor of the relief effort reassured residents that Hon. Jeniva’s intervention was an emergency response to restore hope.

“As a Team we mobilized our own resources to provide this food support. Each household has received 10 kilograms of posho because right now families are struggling to find what to eat,” Byamukama said.

He described the affected Magambo sub-county as the district’s primary food supplier, warning that the crisis could have devastating consequences for the entire region, potentially leading to widespread hunger and economic hardship.

He appealed to the government to swiftly intervene, noting that Rubirizi district’s overall food security hangs in the balance.

Approximately 1,500 kg of posho were distributed to residents across six villages: Kyema, Nyakihanda, Bugaya, Butezi, Busonga, and Butoha.
