PADER, UGANDA – Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng heralded the new Hepatitis B birth dose as a “decisive turning point” for Uganda, branding it the nation’s most powerful weapon in the relentless fight to eradicate the devastating disease.

Dr. Aceng officiated at the official launch of the Hepatitis B birth dose vaccine into the national routine immunization schedule on Friday, September 5, 2025.

The landmark event, which also commemorated World Hepatitis Day 2025, was held at Acholibur Secondary School in Pader District under the global theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down.”

The ultimate goal of this concerted effort is to break down obstacles and put Uganda on a firm path to achieve the global target of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

Minister Aceng launched the vaccine with a resounding declaration of its critical importance, labeling it a “game-changer” in Uganda’s public health battle.

She confirmed that the dose must be administered within 24 hours of birth, calling it the single most effective intervention for preventing mother-to-child transmission of the virus.

“The Hepatitis B birth dose is given within 24 hours of birth and is the most effective way of preventing mother-to-child transmission of Hepatitis B. I call upon all parents, caregivers, and health workers to embrace this life-saving vaccine and ensure all children are vaccinated in a timely manner,” stated Dr. Aceng.

The Minister emphasized that this integration represents a critical step from public awareness to tangible, life-saving intervention.

Hepatitis B is a leading cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer in Uganda, with a significant portion of chronic infections acquired through vertical transmission from mother to child during birth.

The commemoration brought together health officials, development partners, local leaders, and community members, featuring educational skits, testimonies, and free screening services to demystify the disease and encourage testing.
