Rukiga, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni emphasized the importance of tackling poverty at the household level, rather than solely focusing on communal development projects.

The president was addressing a gathering at Rushebeya Pray Ground in Rukiga district on Friday, an event that marked the conclusion of his three-day Parish Development Model (PDM) tour in the Kigezi Sub-region.

Quoting a biblical verse that says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well Matthew 6:33” Museveni encouraged people to take advantage of government programs like PDM and Emyooga, and to shift their focus from non-income generating activities to income-generating ones in order to escape poverty.

The president also advised the people of the region to keep their land together to ensure prosperity, rather than succumbing to the curse of land fragmentation.

“Consider forming family companies to better manage your family wealth and share the proceeds,” he suggested.

During the event, local leaders requested that the president fulfill his pledge to tarmac the 61-kilometer Muhanga-Kisiizi-Kebisoni road and the 38-kilometer Rutobo-Kyogo-Muhanga road.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of ICT and National Guidance, echoed this request, highlighting the importance of these roads in connecting various areas in the region.

Other issues raised during the gathering included the need for better transport means for local council leaders and a possible salary increase for them.

The woman MP for Rukiga, Hon. Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi, emphasized the challenges faced by LC I Chairpersons in overseeing security in villages.
