KAMPALA, UGANDA – The detained Deputy Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, is expected to appear in court today for his bail hearing following the death of his wife, Edith Katende, who died of cancer.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The development follows an immediate production warrant issued on Wednesday, April 8th, 2026, stemming from Mufumbiro’s plea to the Chief Justice to grant him bail to bury his wife.
The Deputy NUP party spokesperson faces charges of inciting supporters to commit violent acts, including murder, against security personnel in Kampala in September last year.
Mufumbiro is accused of unlawfully conducting military-style drills and holding an unlawful assembly with ten others without authorization from the Minister of Internal Affairs.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kawempe, the incarcerated Mufumbiro stated that his late wife, Edith Katende, expressed her final wish for him to lay her to rest.
Mufumbiro says his previous bail applications, including a mandatory bail request, have been unsuccessful, thus asking authorities to allow him “one final act of love.”
Following his last court appearance, Waiswa Mufumbiro, along with other co-accused NUP members, was scheduled to be back in court on April 10, 2026, for rulings on their bail applications in both cases.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) party officials confirmed the passing of Edith Katende Mufumbiro, the wife of Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, via social media on Wednesday morning.
Edith passed away after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer, and party officials have since described her as kind and resilient, noting her unwavering support of her husband.
