RUBANDA, UGANDA – The newly elected Woman Member of Parliament for Rubanda District, Ninsiima Evelyn Kikafunda, has urged the government to consider establishing a Cancer Treatment Centre in the Kigezi sub-region to lighten the burden on patients who undertake long journeys to Mbarara City for treatment.

Ms. Kikafunda made these remarks on Saturday, March 7, 2026, during the church ritual of blessing Green Valley Medical Centre, a health facility located in Nyamasizi Village, Ruhonwa Parish, Hamurwa Sub-county, and Rubanda District.

Kabale Diocese Vicar General Msgnr John Vianney Sunday Presided over the ceremony at the facility whose operation is primarily financed by Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Byomuhangi and his brother, Rev. Fr. Prof. Maxmillian Ngabirano, who both hail from Nyamasizi.

During her 2026 campaign for Woman MP, Ms. Kikafunda recounted meeting patients who shared their struggles and the pain of traveling up to 100 miles from Rubanda to Mbarara, which hosts the only Cancer Treatment Centre in Western Uganda.

“Most of these patients don’t even have enough money for their treatment, let alone the transport costs to and from Mbarara,” she stated.

CUE IN…KIKAFUNDA ON CANCER

Representing the Chief Guest, State Minister of Finance Henry Musasizi, Ms. Kikafunda praised Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Byomuhangi and Rev. Fr. Maxmillian Ngabirano for their selfless efforts in expanding Green Valley Medical Centre, building upon the foundation laid by their late uncle, Rev. Fr. Lazaro Kabasharira, who established the facility in 1981.

“Most people who earn some good fortune, especially those who travel abroad, aim at building fancy homes back at home. However, you have chosen to invest in saving lives by establishing this beautiful health facility,” she remarked.

In his speech, Rev. Fr. Maxmillian Ngabirano explained that Green Valley Medical Centre has grown from a small health facility established in 1981 by the late Rev. Fr. Lazaro Kabasharira. As of 2026, it was operating at the level of a Health Centre III, with plans for further upgrading.

“Before this facility was established in this area, people traveled up to 10 km to seek services at Hamurwa Health Centre IV,” he noted.

Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Byomuhangi took the opportunity to thank all stakeholders who contributed to the growth and development of Green Valley Medical Centre.

These included the late Fr. Kabasharira and his family, the staff at the facility, development partners from the United States, the political leadership of Rubanda District, and community members, especially those on the committee overseeing its operations.

Dr. Gerald Kansiime, the supervisor of Green Valley Medical Centre, added that the facility currently attends to up to 100 patients weekly, with at least 10 mothers seeking maternal health services.

The centre is staffed by two midwives, an enrolled nurse, and a part-time doctor who also provides medical consultations.

He further stated that the range of services offered includes deliveries, antenatal care, treatment of uncomplicated illnesses, immunization, and other essential health services, making it a vital healthcare hub for the local community.
