Community-based organization Bright Her Future today donated assorted food, sanitation and hygiene items to support up to 70 female inmates at Ndorwa Government Women’s Prison.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The items included washing detergents, sanitary towels, maize flour, millet flour, sugar and rice. They were delivered by a team led by Bright Her Future Director Ms. Shivan Ampeire Nayebare.
Ms. Nayebare said the food items were intended to supplement the diet of women with children at the prison.
“We also thought about the little children who are here with their mothers. We know that children have special nutritional needs. They cannot always depend on the same meals their mothers eat. They need special attention and care as they grow despite living in prison walls with their mothers,” Nayebare said.
Bright Her Future also donated hair-plaiting materials, including braiding hair extensions, to support women involved in salon work and hair plaiting at Ndorwa Prison.
“We want the women to have something productive to do with their hands, something that can keep them busy, help them develop hair-plaiting skills and even become a source of income when they return home. We believe that every woman has potential, regardless of where she is today. We do not want them to lose their skills, creativity or sense of purpose because they are in prison,” Nayebare added.
Ms. Nayebare further explained that the largest portion of the donation consisted of sanitary towels, intended to help the incarcerated women manage their menstrual days safely and with dignity.
“Access to essential hygiene items, including sanitary towels, remains a challenge for vulnerable women, including those in prison. We therefore decided to take the initiative to begin reaching out to these women, starting with those in prison,” Nayebare said, adding that the organization aims to continue reaching women in vulnerable situations, restoring dignity, creating opportunities and giving hope where it is needed most.

She said the main aim of the rehabilitation program was to ensure that the women not only stayed busy while in prison, but could also earn a living using the skills they acquired after returning home.
