The warning comes in response to the hazardous driving conditions brought about by heavy rains, which the Ministry notes can rapidly change road conditions and significantly increase the risk of accidents.
The latest agro-meteorological weather forecast from the Uganda National Meteorological Services (DMS) shows that the month November will have a mixed bag of weather conditions across the country, with significant rainfall expected largely in the southwest.
According to the forecast, the sub-regions of Kigezi and Ankole are likely to receive substantial rainfall, following a late October period that saw heavy downpours in the western sector, with the Mid- and South-western regions reporting incidents of flooding.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has issued advisories to the public to mitigate the risks, urging drivers to slow down during heavy rain, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and allow extra time for their journeys.
Motorists are also advised to enhance visibility by using headlights and functioning wipers, and to avoid sudden braking or sharp turns on wet roads.
The Ministry warns against driving through flooded sections, advising that if the road surface is not visible, drivers should turn back or wait until it is safe.
Road users were urged to respect traffic guidance by obeying signs, diversions, and instructions from officers and road workers in construction areas, and to always check their brakes, lights, wipers, and tires before setting off.
The advisory also calls for courtesy toward pedestrians, cyclists, and boda bodas, while bus and taxi operators are urged to avoid overloading, speeding, and traveling in heavy downpours where possible.
The Ministry has further appealed to the public to report severely damaged sections of the road network to the Ministry for quick intervention.
