The suspects have been identified as Kimbugwe Alia, the driver of bus UA 092AS, and Mutesasira Abubakari, the driver of UAN 619X, who were intercepted during a targeted traffic operation at the Golf Course in Kampala.

According to Traffic and Road Safety Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, Kimbugwe’s bus was carrying 110 pupils, while Mutesasira’s vehicle was packed with 97 pupils.

He added that the two drivers have since been charged with relevant traffic offenses and are currently detained at Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) awaiting their day in court.

The Traffic Police spokesperson confirmed that the operation is part of intensified efforts to curb the rising number of road crashes involving school children, with overloading condemned as a grave compromise to pupil safety.

“After intercepting these vehicles, we found that Kimbugwe was carrying 110 pupils, while Mutesasira had packed 97 pupils. Both drivers were arrested and are in our Police cells. The point to note is that such operations are part of our intensified efforts to curb the rising number of road crashes involving school children and will continue,” stated SP Michael Kananura.

Police are now working closely with St. Kizito Primary School management to ensure the young learners are safely transported to their destination using appropriate means of transport.

Meanwhile, the Police, in collaboration with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Education and transport regulators, are working on comprehensive guidelines aimed at improving the safety of school transportation.

The authorities have since said that the new measures, which will be communicated to the public once the consultative process is concluded, are designed to minimize the increasing number of accidents involving school children.
