UNITE-Kabale-Campus Dean, Annet Komunda
KABALE – The management of the Uganda National Institute of Teacher Education (UNITE) – Kabale Campus has issued an update on its progress and needs, one year after its establishment, ahead of the first official visit by the UNITE Council.

Ms. Komunda revealed that the UNITE National Council had never previously visited the Kabale District-based institution, which transitioned from the former National Teachers College and officially commenced operations as a degree-awarding institution in 2025.
“We are looking forward to hosting the UNITE Council because it will be their first visit since we transitioned from NTC,” she stated.
The UNITE Council is responsible for the training, certification, and professional development of teachers in Uganda. Its roles include developing and implementing standards for teacher education and professionalism, conducting research and innovations in teacher education, as well as accrediting and regulating teacher training institutions across the country.
Ms. Komunda further explained that during the Council’s visit on June 18, they would undertake several activities, including a tour of the pedagogical areas to monitor progress and the institution’s properties. The Council members will also be introduced to community leaders, including LC.1 Chairpersons and their councils from neighboring areas.

Ms. Komunda highlighted the significance of UNITE Kabale Campus to the Kabale District community, the Kigezi Sub-region, and Southwestern Uganda. She noted that the institution has already produced high-quality teachers already in practice, and that the upgrade from a diploma to a degree-awarding institution has further improved teaching standards, especially with the introduction of the competency-based curriculum.

The Academic Registrar, Ms. Gloria Akatukunda, urged teachers and the community to take advantage of the newly introduced Performing Arts Course, which now combines music, dance, drama, and media skills. This is an upgrade from the previous Music, Dance, and Drama course that focused on specialization in only one skill.
“There’s a huge demand for teachers skilled in Performing Arts because the initial course produced teachers with only a single skill,” she said.

Ms. Akatukunda also outlined the campus’s needs, including a request for an increase in government scholarship slots and approval from the Council for the institution to begin offering courses like Bachelor of Education in Secondary Arts and Bachelor of Education in Agriculture.

The Campus Dean, Ms. Komunda, also highlighted that some of the old buildings still contain asbestos, a roofing material linked to health issues such as cancer. She said they would raise this concern with the UNITE Council as an urgent need. The estimated budget for replacing the asbestos roofing at UNITE Kabale Campus is approximately 5.6 billion Ugandan shillings.
Since its transition from NTC, UNITE Kabale Campus has made substantial changes in staff recruitment, now requiring a minimum of a Master’s Degree for teaching staff. Since officially becoming a degree-awarding institution, the campus has enrolled two cohorts of students, with the first graduation ceremony expected in 2028.
