KABALE – The government has unveiled plans for a game-changing Irish potato processing factory in Kabale District, a project set to curb post-harvest losses, boost farmer incomes, and generate thousands of youth jobs.

The development was announced by the State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (Industry), David Bahati, during a thanksgiving service at Kakomo Church of Uganda in Kitumba Sub-county.

The event, held on Sunday, June 14th, 2026, was presided over by Rev. Warren Akatwijuka, the parish priest of Kakomo Church of Uganda, and served as a platform for outlining a future of value addition and self-reliance for the district.

Minister Bahati said the government has committed to ensuring that the new Irish potato processing factory is established in the region, with the aim of ending the long struggle of watching harvests rot due to a lack of market.

He stated that by processing potatoes locally, the factory will reduce post-harvest losses and ensure farmers earn more from their hard work, with the plant prioritizing local raw materials to encourage expanded acreage.

“The factory is a game-changer for our farmers by processing our potatoes locally. By embracing value addition on agricultural products, we are not only reducing post-harvest losses but also ensuring that our people earn more from their hard work,” Minister Bahati stated.

The minister added that beyond the potato plant, an iron ore factory in neighboring Rubanda District will soon join forces with the Kabale project to form an industrial hub, offering the youth sustainable jobs and a clear pathway out of poverty.

The parish priest of Kakomo Church of Uganda, Rev. Warren Akatwijuka, drew a parallel between the planned physical development and spiritual gratitude in his homily, explaining the importance of giving thanks to God.

He further noted that thanksgiving is a channel through which people receive blessings and protection from the Almighty, adding that it is one way believers receive back from God.

“When we give thanks to God, we open a door for Him to bless us and keep us safe. Just as Kabale is growing with new factories and jobs, our spiritual lives also grow when we live with a grateful heart. Thanksgiving is not just a word; it is how we receive back from God,” said Rev. Warren.

From a mere 81 factories in 1986 to over 10,000 today, Uganda has undergone a silent industrial revolution, and the government now aims to raise the sector’s economic contribution from 27 to 45 percent within five years.
