KANUNGU – Police in Kanungu have launched an intensive investigation following a horrific domestic incident that resulted in the death of an elderly man and the attempted murder of his teenage son.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The deceased has been identified as Rwakaremera Joseph, 83, a resident of Kebiremo Cell, Northern Ward, Butogota Town Council, while the attempted murder victim is his 18-year-old son, Rwebisengye Swaibu.
Sources allege that the elderly father and his teenage son had been cohabitating peacefully in their home until the tranquility was shattered on the evening of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM.
As the pair sat together in their kitchen, three unknown male assailants armed with machetes stormed the residence, where two of the men restrained and strangled the 83-year-old in a swift and brutal attack.
The third assailant seized the young man, Rwebisengye Swaibu, dragged him to the main house, struck him on the forehead with a panga, and forced him under a bed, where he was guarded as the fatal attack on his father continued.
The three unknown attackers fled the scene on foot, escaping through a nearby coffee plantation after confirming that the elderly father, Rwakaremera, had breathed his last.
The Kigezi regional police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, told the press that after the attack, the injured Swaibu managed to alert his brother, Kayabuki, who immediately reported the matter to Butogota Police Station.
Maate noted that officers rushed to the scene, where Scene of Crime Officers documented the grim evidence and a sniffer dog was deployed, but its effectiveness was hampered by a tampered crime scene.
Police investigations have revealed a troubling history of domestic violence rooted in a land dispute, with the deceased allegedly having experienced long-term conflict with his children and first wife over a piece of land in Kanyantorogo.
In a chilling precursor to the murder, police confirmed that in May 2026, the deceased was assaulted by his own children and a grandson, a case reported to Kanyantorogo Police Station, where the parties were reconciled rather than charged.
Following the current murder investigation, authorities have moved decisively, arresting three suspects who are children of the deceased, along with one grandson. All are currently in police custody assisting with ongoing inquiries.
“This is a tragic and deeply unsettling case of alleged familicide driven by land feuds. We extend our condolences to the affected family while assuring the public that all involved in this heinous act will face the full force of the law,” Maate stated.
Meanwhile, the body of the late Rwakaremera Joseph was conveyed to Kanungu Health Centre IV, where a postmortem examination is currently pending.
