The deceased has been identified as Benson Twinamatsiko, a native of Rwakigaju cell, Kazindiro parish, in Rukungiri district, who was earning a living as a builder in Ntungamo.

The deceased, in his early 20s, allegedly had several misunderstandings with his wife, a Rwandan also in her 20s, Joanita Nyakato (commonly known as Mutoni), at their rented house in Rubaare II, Kagango ward.

According to the area LC I chairperson, Milton Ndebesa, the tragedy unfolded in the overnight hours of Monday into Tuesday, when the deceased’s wife raised the alarm, alerting neighbors that her husband was dead.

Residents recount a troubled household, with Chairperson Ndebesa alleging that the couple had been at loggerheads over domestic violence, with accusations stemming from the wife’s alleged extramarital affairs.

The deceased’s elder sister, Patience Akatukunda, sadly told this reporter how her brother began a normal Monday by waking up and going to work before the day turned tragic.

She stated that by Tuesday, after the couple had prepared and eaten the food the deceased brought home that evening, his wife told a neighbor that her husband was dead, claiming he had swallowed a rat poison tablet.

“An ordinary Monday of work and a shared supper gave way to tragedy by Tuesday, leaving a family to mourn a death they never saw coming,” Patience remarked.

A postmortem examination conducted at the scene by Dr. Alex Aryahebwa of Rubaare Health Centre IV formally confirmed that Twinamatsiko died as a result of poisoning but was unable to specify the substance used.

Meanwhile, Nyakato, the wife, has denied any connection to her husband’s death. However, sources close to the investigation have alleged that she orchestrated the move to kill him.

The deceased’s body has since been handed over to the relatives who were present, to allow burial preparations as the police begin investigations into the tragedy.
