“It is with a heavy heart that I inform our esteemed colleagues, the Parliament fraternity, and all who loved our brother, the late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah, that his father, Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, has passed away at the age of 97 at St Mary’s Hospital, Lacor,” Speaker Among posted.
Speaker Anita Among extended condolences to the bereaved family and noted that funeral arrangements would be shared after consulting with them.
Mzee Okori’s death comes just over two years after the passing of his son, Jacob Oulanyah, who died on March 20, 2022, following an illness.
In the wake of his son’s death, the elder Okori became a notable public figure, making contentious claims regarding the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.
Mzee Okori publicly alleged that his son did not die of natural causes but was poisoned. He claimed that Oulanyah had confided in him about being poisoned, which subsequently led to the health complications that resulted in his death.
The allegations prompted a significant public debate and led police authorities to initiate plans to summon Nathan Okori and others for questioning, though authorities later dropped those plans.
The claims created a rift in the family narrative: while Mzee Okori maintained the poisoning allegations, other family members, including Oulanyah’s cousin Dr. Opiyo Oloya, maintained that the former Speaker had died of natural causes.
