The announcement was made in a press statement issued on February 20, 2026, and signed by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama.

The repeat elections will cover the positions of Chairpersons, Directly Elected Councillors, Women Councillors, and Councillors representing Special Interest Groups.

In the statement, Justice Byabakama confirmed that the Commission, in fulfilling its mandate to ensure the completion of the electoral process, has rescheduled the elections to allow for comprehensive administrative and logistical preparations.

Byabakama added that the strategic adjustment also accommodates all affected electoral areas, including those where fresh nominations were necessitated by the unfortunate demise of candidates.

Polling is scheduled to commence at 7:00 AM and conclude at 4:00 PM at all designated polling stations within the affected electoral areas nationwide, as well as at the respective electoral college venues where applicable.

The statement further indicated that the counting of votes will begin immediately after the close of polling at the respective stations, followed by the timely declaration of results.

Justice Simon Byabakama urged all stakeholders, including candidates, political parties, and voters, to participate peacefully in the electoral exercise and to fully comply with all applicable electoral laws and guidelines.
