KIRUHURA, UGANDA – Police have identified seven of the eight victims who perished in a devastating head-on collision along the Mbarara-Lyantonde highway on the evening of Friday last week.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The accident occurred on February 13, 2026, at Kibega 1 Village in Kiruhura District, claiming the lives of eight people traveling in a white Toyota Hiace (registration UBQ 016U) after it collided with a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer (KDQ 668L/ZH 5133).
The fatal crash happened at around 6:30 pm after the driver of the Hiace attempted to overtake from a corner and veered into the path of the oncoming trailer, which was traveling in its proper lane from Lyantonde towards Mbarara.
According to the Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Samson Kasasira, the impact was catastrophic, claiming the lives of eight occupants of the Hiace and leaving one survivor currently admitted at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Kasasira has confirmed that the identification process, which required extricating bodies from the wreckage, has now established the identities of seven victims, including Musinguzi Victor (30) of Ibanda and Otaki Charles (49) from Oyam District.
The other bodies are of Abdu Sserugo of Nsangi (Wakiso), Lukyamuzi Godfrey of Kinoni (Lwengo) who was the driver of the Toyota Hiace, Kitone Julius of Masaka, Ajidra Bosco of Maracha, and Agaba Onesmas (45).
Kasasira added that one person remains unidentified as efforts to notify the next of kin are ongoing, while the four bodies initially trapped in the vehicle have since been recovered.
Police have extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially when overtaking, to prevent such needless loss of life.
