Counsel Majambere thanked her supporters, calling their energy and solidarity a humbling experience and characterizing her independent campaign as a movement for Kanungu’s future.
“The energy, the belief, and the solidarity shown by the people of Kanungu has been the most humbling experience of my life. This was not just a political campaign; it was a movement built on shared hopes for our district’s future,” Counsel Majambere stated.
Her remarks followed the highly competitive Parliamentary and Presidential elections held nationwide on Thursday, January 15th, which saw intense political engagement at all levels.
In a candid assessment of the electoral landscape, the senior lawyer attributed her narrow loss to what she described as systemic political interference.
She cited issues of voter bribery, intimidation of agents and voters, and the beating and harassment of supporters as significant factors that marred the process.
“While we celebrate democracy, we must also have the courage to confront the elements that seek to undermine the purity of the people’s will. The right to choose a leader freely and fairly is sacred, and we witnessed attempts to subvert that right,” Majambere asserted.
Despite her loss, Majambere vowed to continue her core missions of prioritizing human capital development, improving healthcare access, and enhancing service delivery at the grassroots level even without the official title of Member of Parliament.
“My commitment to Kanungu was never contingent on a title. It is a covenant with my home. We will continue to work, to organize, and to serve. Development and justice are our goals, and there are many paths to achieve them,” Counsel Esther Majambere declared.
The Electoral Commission’s final tally confirmed the incumbent, Hon. Patience Nkunda Kishaba (Independent), retained her seat with 41,625 votes, while Counsel Esther Majambere (Independent) secured a strong second place with 38,224 votes in a tightly contested race.
Other contenders included Betty Namara Kataba of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party with 20,241 votes, and Zaidah Akandinda of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) with 571 votes.
Meanwhile, a political survey by the Kigezi Region Journalist Panel, released on Saturday, indicated a shifting political dynamic in Kanungu.
The report suggested that church influence, particularly from the majority Catholic congregation, played a significant role, with perceived alignment towards certain candidates.
Furthermore, the survey highlighted that the “excessive use of money” in the district posed a serious challenge, subtly undermining the electorate’s right to freely choose their preferred leaders.
As Kanungu District processes the results, the dignified response and firm promise of continued service from Counsel Esther Majambere have set a notable tone for political discourse.
