KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has confirmed the arrest of two motorists as part of a zero-tolerance stance on drunk driving, during a major festive season enforcement operation.

The arrests were made in the early hours of Thursday along the bustling Kampala-Jinja Highway, a critical artery that has seen numerous accidents this festive season.

Michael Kananura, the Directorate’s spokesperson, told the press that the drivers were apprehended in the Namawojjolo and Mbalala areas after being found operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

The operation, conducted under the banner of ‘Arrive Alive’, is part of an intensified nationwide road safety campaign targeting the festive period.

Authorities have long identified December and January as high-risk months. The two suspects arrested for drunk driving during this period are now being held at Mukono Police Station awaiting prosecution.

“The operations form part of our intensified festive-season road safety enforcement aimed squarely at reducing road crashes, injuries, and the tragic loss of life. We continue to enforce traffic laws and regulations rigorously to ensure the safety of all road users,” stated Kananura.

He added that checkpoints, patrols, and breathalyzer tests are being deployed strategically across major highways and urban centers to deter reckless behavior.

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson said that drunk driving is a serious offense that puts all lives at grave risk and will be met with decisive arrest and prosecution.

Kananura further emphasized that traffic compliance is not optional, but a fundamental responsibility tied to the privilege of holding a driver’s license.

The Uganda Red Cross Society and Safe Way Right Way Uganda have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement during festivities, citing drunk driving as a leading contributor to fatal accidents.
