KAMPALA, UGANDA– The newly nominated presidential candidate and National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has declared a political war against the ruling government, vowing to secure freedom for the nation at all costs.

Candidate Kyagulanyi made the declaration on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, while addressing the media shortly after his official nomination exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, at the Lweza-Lubowa grounds in Kampala.

Accompanied by his wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, and a number of his NUP party members, Kyagulanyi was nominated in a ceremony that concluded at exactly 2:17 pm. Following the nomination, he was briefed on the Electoral Commission guidelines.

As a nominated presidential candidate, he was subsequently assigned a security motorcade, a bodyguard, and a Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle to facilitate his campaign activities.

In his address, Kyagulanyi asserted that Uganda’s primary challenge is not a lack of national wealth, but poor leadership, which he accused of persistently hindering the country’s growth.

He vowed to continue moving forward despite any obstacles and protested what he described as the injustice faced by his supporters and other political players who are detained in government prisons without access to a fair trial.

“We either get our freedom or die trying to get freedom. Be prepared for war,” Kyagulanyi stated.

In a pointed message, he urged incumbent President Yoweri Museveni to heed the historical perspective of veteran politician Kahinda Otafiire, noting that Uganda existed long before the current leadership and will endure long after.

Kyagulanyi affirmed his commitment to establishing a government that is responsive to the plight of public sector workers, specifically mentioning teachers, doctors, and others who struggle with salary disparities while delivering services to citizens.

He extended his message of freedom beyond Uganda’s borders, honored his supporters, and promised that their suffering would not be in vain.

The six candidates successfully nominated to run in Uganda’s 2026 presidential election include incumbent President Yoweri Museveni (NRM), Gen. Mugisha Gregory Muntu (ANT), and Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (NUP).

Others are candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Robert Kasibante (NPP), and Joseph Mabirizi (CP).

Campaigns for the nominated presidential candidates will officially commence on September 29, 2025, after all candidates have harmonized their campaign programmes with the Electoral Commission.
