The first tragedy, a head-on collision between a white Mitsubishi Fuso (UAV 646X) and a white Toyota Ipsum (UAZ 185L), occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. along the Kisoro-Kabale Highway in Nyakatembe village, Kisoro District.

Preliminary reports indicate that the Toyota Ipsum, traveling from Kanaba toward Kisoro, encountered the Mitsubishi Fuso, which had veered into its lane.

The driver of the Toyota Ipsum swerved off the road in an attempt to avoid a direct collision, causing the vehicle to overturn and roll into a valley.

Tragically, one female passenger, identified as Mukagilasi Merabu, a resident of Ruburi Village, Kanaba Subcounty, succumbed to her injuries while en route to Mutolere Hospital.

Four other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed for medical treatment; they have been identified as Kwitonda Annet (35), Nyiravuganeza Peruth (33), Owimana Jane (35), and Kampurira Obedi (37).

Police, led by ASP Ainomugisha Musa, the District Traffic Officer, and assisted by SGT Mbabazi James, responded to the scene and intercepted the Mitsubishi Fuso at a checkpoint in Kanaba.

The driver of the Toyota Ipsum fled the scene and remains at large, while the damaged vehicle has been towed and is parked at Kisoro Central Police Station pending inspection.

In a separate incident that evening, a fatal hit-and-run occurred at approximately 7:50 p.m. along the Kihihi-Ishasha Road near Kihihi Primary School in Kanungu District.

A Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEX 495H, traveling at high speed from Kihihi toward Ishasha, struck a pedestrian within his lane before the unidentified rider fled on foot, abandoning the motorcycle.

The victim, identified as 43-year-old Nkwasibwe Kenneth, a resident of Kabuga, Kihihi Sub-County, was rushed to Kihihi Health Center IV but later succumbed to his injuries.

Police action was led by CPL Mubiru Edward and other officers from Kihihi Police Station, with the cause preliminarily attributed to reckless riding by the motorcycle rider who remains at large.

Kigezi Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that in both cases, police documented the scenes, issued postmortem forms to the families, and launched investigations to apprehend the fleeing drivers.

Maate added that the damaged vehicle and motorcycle were towed to Kisoro and Kanungu Central Police Stations, respectively, pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
