Residents demanded clear explanations about the roles and responsibilities of Members of Parliament while challenging candidates on their integrity and past statements. The event turned confrontational as voters pressed the aspirants on various allegations.

Sam Byibesho was accused of disrespecting constituents by allegedly stating that their “heads are not clear” and favoring Rwandan nationals over Ugandans in job opportunities.

Dr. Leo Mfitimana faced questions about why he does not operate a clinic in the municipality despite being a medical doctor, while Emmanuel Maniraguha came under fire for reportedly calling Chahi Village a “dumping site for dirty water from the town.”

Residents voiced their dissatisfaction, demanding accountability from the candidates. Many emphasized the need for leaders who prioritize local development and transparency.

Dr. Mfitimana defended his record, explaining that after completing his studies, he returned to Kisoro seeking employment but was denied opportunities due to corruption.

“When I first returned to Kisoro as a qualified doctor, I was denied opportunities because I refused to pay bribes demanded by those in power. Rather than compromise my principles, I chose to serve elsewhere. But my heart never left home now I’ve returned with experience and determination to serve my people with integrity and the healthcare they deserve,” Mfitimana said.

Byibesho sidestepped direct responses to the allegations against him, instead listing his achievements during his tenure in Parliament.

He cited his infrastructure achievements, including rehabilitating flood-prone roads and expanding electricity to 3,000 unconnected households.

Maniraguha, addressing the backlash over his Chahi Village remarks, acknowledged the area’s drainage problems and pledged to prioritize proper drainage systems if elected.

He clarified an MP’s mandate: crafting legislation, overseeing government spending, and representing constituent interests in Parliament.

The heated exchanges highlighted voters’ growing demand for accountability and tangible solutions to local challenges as the election season intensifies.
