The deceased has been identified as Mumbere Andres, a 30-year-old fisherman from Rwenjubu Cell in Rwenjubu Ward, Katwe Kabatoro Town Council.

According to sources, the tragic incident occurred on April 18, 2025, at the shores of Lake Edward, where Andres allegedly ventured into a breeding zone for crocodiles and hippos. A massive crocodile attacked him, dragging him into the water.

The Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the incident, stating that the police marine unit responded promptly and recovered some body parts of the deceased at approximately 2 pm.

The remains of the deceased were later retrieved, and it was found that the leg and arms were severely mutilated by the crocodile.

SP Tumushime issued a stern warning to fishermen, emphasizing the importance of avoiding fishing in breeding zones for crocodiles at the shores of Lake Edward and practicing proper fishing methods.

“Our officers at Katwe Kabatoro Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Mumbere Andres, a 30-year-old fisherman who allegedly ventured into a breeding zone for crocodiles and hippos while engaging in illegal fishing using the hooking method. A massive crocodile attacked him, dragging him into the water,” said SP Nelson Tumushime.

SP Tumushime further stated that the police marine unit will continue to conduct patrols on the lake to curb illegal fishing, and fishermen who fail to comply with guidelines will face arrest and prosecution.

The incident highlights the dangers of fishing in restricted areas and underscores the importance of adhering to safety protocols.
